What So Not, the Australian duo consisting of Flume and Emoh Instead have released a diverse mix that couples with their European tour announcement. The 27 track collection spans an hour and consists of tunes including mostly trap and hip-hop. The fellas from down under carefully selected artists that match their musical stylings with names like RL Grime, Kaytranada, and Mr. Carmack to name a few. We decided to break down the mix into our favorite 10 tracks as well as include a tracklist of most of the mix that wasn’t included on the SoundCloud page.
1. Sock It To Me – Kaytranada Remix
First up on the list is the Canadian Kaytranada with a Miss Elliot remix. He describes his music as, “Hippy Hop, Stuff that’ll make you dance, Stuff that’ll makes you do moshpits, stuff that makes you wanna have sex with and neckbraking beats” and this remix definitely crosses off a few genres on that list. He brings in these filthy horns and violin riffs and throws Missy’s original lyrics over them for an infectious tune.
2. Be Quiet – Falcons
Next up is a Los Angeles based producer Falcons. His original “Be Quiet” is reminiscent of the Ying Yang Twins “Whisper Song” but with a much dancier vibe. Weird synths and interesting percussion work together well enough to land him a spot on our list. Check out his remix of M.I.A’s “Yala” thats sick too.
3) Rappers Rapping Rap – Mr. Carmack
Next up is a track of Mr. Carmack’s The Lost Tracks “Rappers Rapping Rap.” The Hawaiian based producer has been dominant in the scene since releasing Bang Vol 3. and The Life and Death EP and we can see why on this track. Super unique sounds combined with a huge percussive backing gets your head bobbing and begging for more, which he supplies at the 1:15 mark. Check out his Lost Tracks here.
4. Cigarette Song (Snakehips remix) – Raury
After a jam packed hard hitting first 20ish minutes What So Not tone it down a notch with Snakehips remix of “Cigarette Song.” Snakehips is a production duo from London that have been together since 2012 that produce in a variety of genres. Their remix of Raury’s “Cigarette Song” uses only the lyrics and restructure everything around it. Some relaxing piano builds into some smooth synths and snappy percussion that work so well with the vocals. Definitely worth a listen.
5. Can’t Do Without You – Caribou
Coming in at the number five spot is Caribou with “Can’t Do Without You.” Caribou is a Canadian foursome that provides melodic tunes with a lot of ambient textures. “Can’t Do Without You” has some indie vibes but still maintains its danceability with some unique flavors. Really love the builds and whooshes that are going on towards the end of the track.
6. Like This Like That (Vocal Mix) – What So Not feat. Dieze Tigrona
Just when we thought the mix might be winding down What So Not hits us with a wild original in “Like This Like That.” This bass heavy tracks with a plethora of bleeps and bloops and craziness supplied by Dieze Tigrona’s French (?) vocals. This track will definitely get you going.
7. I Think About You – Canblaster
Next up is an incredibly diverse track from Canblaster, a Frenchman who is one fourth of the dance music clique Cub Cheval. His success began with the song “Jetpack” in 2010 and has continued to “I Think About You” his most recent song. Some really ambient sounds begin the song then he hits you with a drop a 1:34 that drives your ears into bliss.
8. No ID 43:15
I can’t find the song at 43:15 anywhere but it is so good. A sawing synth line with some chopped up lyrics and big kick drums has me drooling. Maybe it’s an unreleased What So Not track?
9. Fall In Love (remix) – Moody Good
What So Not closes out their mix with a genre defying banger from Moody Good. Moody is a British producer that used to be one part of the incredible dubstep duo 16-bit. He is now working on the solo project of Moody Good without his production missing a beat. Here he remixes J-Dilla’s “Fall in Love” which starts off low key before exploding into a barrage of sounds. Love this track.
