Synths, synths, synths. The debut album by Brooklyn based Lowtemp artist GiBBZ literally begs the question Who GiBBZ a F#@$ ?! A the short answer is: everyone should. The four-track EP comes with a few different feels, but the one constant amongst each track is the quality of production, not surprising for a Berkley College of Music alumnus. Oh and the synths, boy, are there synths.
The brainchild of Mike Gibney, GiBBZ brings a smattering of sex, disco, electro-pop, and a confidence that can only be cultivated when someone finds exactly what he should be doing in this universe. A funnyman by trade, we sure are glad Mr. Gibney has found his way behind a microphone and under the wing of ElectroSoul / FutureFunk pioneer Gramatik and his Lowtemp label.
Who GiBBZ a F#@$ opens with “Do It For You”, a down tempo love song that sounds like it would fit right in with the B-Sides of “Discovery”. Gibney leads off with the kind of lyrical bravado that is rarely found in the EDM world. A male lead who knows exactly what he brings to the table, and isn’t afraid to speak his mind.
“Again and Again” is GiBBZ’s party anthem, posing the question “Is it so bad to go out and have fun?” With a catchy bass line, bubbly synths, and lyrics that beg to be belted, “Again and Again” will be played over and over (no I will not go for the low hanging fruit) at parties all summer.
“Crafty” immediately reminded me of Chicago’s Saturday in the Park, but with a fresh coat of paint and a vibe that you can really get behind. GiBBZ saves the best for last on his debut album.
“Show You” really displays the versatility of this budding star. Moving seamlessly between disco and 90s pop, GiBBZ inserts his trademark sexual energy and confidence with a hook that demands his lover “want you to show me that you need me, ya gotta give it to receive it, I’ll be the same without or with it.”
The lasting impression of Who GiBBZ a F#@$ is one of anticipation. We’re just scratching the surface with GiBBZ. He brings an energy that is undeniable, and with his work on Lowtemp with labelmates Gramatik, ExMag, iLLUMNTR, BRANX and Russ Liquid, we should be seeing some great things come out of Brooklyn in the near future. I for one GiB a F#@$!!!
