On November 17, 2013, a female claiming to work closely with many DJ’s as an EDM Public Relations Specialist held an “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. During the session, she answered all questions without boundaries and encouraged users to ask scandalous questions.
While she did initially come off as a phony and gossip hungry, other answers deep into the AMA were actually knowledgeable, insightful, and enlightening.
Here are some of the more interesting points of the AMA:
- If you don’t have a media/VIP wristband, the best way to get backstage to meet artists at a festival is to say that you’re looking for artist relations when they ask for your wristband. Generally artist relations are deep in the backstages of the event, so security will point you in that direction but you will end up crossing paths with artist trailers.
- Many points in the AMA, users asked about how to get started working in the EDM industry in public relations/media and as DJs/producers, and she provided lengthy, knowledgeable answers.
- Down to earth DJ’s who don’t have “behind the scenes dirt” include Laidback Luke, Kaskade, Skrillex, A-Trak, Porter Robinson, Dash Berlin, Nicky Romero, & Zedd.
- Porter Robinson is 100% straightedge and is a vegetarian.
- The most disrespectful DJ’s this person has encountered are Afrojack, Mat Zo, and Carnage.
- The Nervo girls haven’t “slept their way to the top”.
- The crazier backstage DJ parties happen at overseas events (outside the U.S.)
- For the artists who do use drugs, the most popular are cocaine and marijuana. MDMA is not used by virtually all DJ’s
- Reddit users asked about almost every DJ – this woman seemed pretty honest about which DJ’s she’s encountered and the ones she hasn’t.
Here are some of the more shocking points from the session:
- She listed quite a few DJ’s who have their songs ghost-produced, the most surprising was #1 DJ Hardwell.
- DJ legend and pioneer, Paul Oakenfold, is allegedly a homosexual.
- The champagne Steve Aoki uses at shows is actually apple cider. He is currently 100% sober.
- Only reason Danny Avila has come up so fast is because his father knows people in the industry.
- Fatboy Slim and Afrojack are bisexual.
- Afrojack allegedly has sex with females with his shirt on because he is self-conscious about his weight.
- Heartthrob and richest DJ Calvin Harris does not sleep around and more often than not turns girls down after shows.
- Of the few times she ran into deadmau5, he was very down to earth and not a dick (contrary to his public image).
- Markus Schulz has a very clean & humble public image, but he’s a DJ that needs to have a groupie girl after every show. Although he’s been married for a long time, he and his wife have an open marriage.
Unfortunately we will never be able to validate any of the claims from this Ask Me Anything session. However, if you get the chance it’s definitely worthwhile to scroll through the entire transcript. At best it provides insight on behind the scenes lives of the biggest DJ’s, and at the least it’s an entertaining read for anyone who likes EDM.
