The Dutch duo W&W, consisting of Willem van Hanegem & Ward van der Harst, have already brought a lot of amazing musical creations into the world and much more of them are coming up. They started producing together in 2007 and have been together ever since. Their sound consists of diverse melodies that include trance, electro house, and progressive house. You might recognize them by some of their amazing smashers, such as “Rave After Rave”, “Thunder” and “Bigfoot”.
W&W keeps growing and performing on stages and festivals all over the world, including Amsterdam Dance Event in the Netherlands. We got the opportunity to have a chat with these guys and dive into their dynamic history, careers, interests and future plans. Enjoy.
Have you guys been to Amsterdam Dance Event before?
Yes, this is the fourth or fifth year we are performing at ADE. It’s something to be excited about, because everybody is in Amsterdam during ADE. You bump into colleges all the time. We just saw Martin Garrix which was really nice, because we never see each other.
Why would you advise our readers to visit ADE?
There are so many different acts to enjoy at ADE. Whether you like of EDM: house, trance, techno, hardstyle, etc., there are always parties that will suit your interests. Everybody joins and it’s very easy to switch from location to location. There’s a lot of variation between music, but also between venues. If you prefer to party in a club you can go there, but you could also go to a festival. An example of this is Amsterdam Music Festival, which exists for two years now and around 40,000 people are visiting. There are many more options for everyone than with other big events. You could party at clubs with 100 people. We just heard that Skrillex is performing at a club with around 100 people, but you could also go to the Heineken Music Hall. There are so many different locations with different vibes and we think that’s very unique.
In short, how did you two meet?
A common friend we produced music with lived around the corner from one of us. We got in touch via him. After a while, we started sending out music to each other. One night, we went to a party with a whole group and we got along really well. So we met up a few times, just for fun, to go out. One time we decided to produce some music together and we liked it. That was the best track one of us had ever produced, back then. It got picked up by Armin and we signed with his label. We were working on a lot of different music back then, also on our own and at a certain moment we realized that every track we produced together was twice as good as all the other stuff we were busy with. We dropped everything and really started as a duo.
What makes you guys this good as a duo?
We complete each other. I’m good at the things he’s bad in and it also works the other way around. That’s why there’s always something missing when we produce music on our own. We are both very focused on the parts that we’re each good and responsible for. If one of us isn’t there, something is definitely missing and we notice that.
What’s the most awesome location you have performed so far?
That’s a really difficult question. Miami is amazing, of course. Tomorrowland is always taking place at a great location, it kind of seems like a valley. Madison Square Garden, New York. There are so many awesome locations. We got to perform at the baseball stadium in Philadelphia after the game, that was amazing! There are many great stadiums. Ultra in Europe would be great and once we were performing in Seattle, that place was crazy. It’s huge and it’s in the mountains, in the middle of nowhere. You still have to drive for over two hours from Seattle. At first you drive through the forest, through the mountains, then through the desert and then it’s raining. You drive through many different seasons and when you arrive, it seems like a valley. The backstage area is on a cliff. That was definitely an awesome location, but there are so many of them. I also thought Tomorrowland in Brazil was really cool. You forget about all the venues. We are very lucky that we got the opportunity to perform at many great places, there are too many of them to numerate.
Do you guys have some surprises in the future that you want to share?
There is a lot of music coming up. New tracks with Armin, Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki, and many others. Of course, we will bring out many new singles, so there is a lot happening. We are having a concept tour next year, but we can’t tell a lot about that yet. We are very busy with it, but a lot is coming up!
