YAKO is one of the fastest growing Chinese artists currently emerging in the electronic scene. The aspiring artist has been involved in electronic music since his teens and has garnered a massive following in his home town of Hong Kong. YAKO got his start working in the Chinese club LEVELS and was quickly given a chance behind the decks at the club. Since then he has been dominating the Chinese market with his well crafted bass/bass house sound. Here’s what YAKO had to say when asked about the electronic scene in China.
“I believe that electronic music is a universal language for everyone, and it’s time to show the entire world how a Chinese artist is capable of inspiring people pursuing their own dreams of making music, or any form of art”.
As the electronic industry grows in Asia, YAKO has been spreading his wings and branching out to countries like the United States and the UK. He is fresh off a b2b performance at EDC Las Vegas with fellow Chinese producer Carta and recently became the first Chinese Artist to perform mainstage at Creamfields. RaverRafting had the opportunity to sit down with YAKO and ask him some questions about his performances, musical career, and upcoming projects. Check out our exclusive interview below and stay tuned for more YAKO news.
RR: You started working in a club at age 16, what made you decide to transition to producing electronic music?
YAKO: I actually started to work in a club at 18 but I’ve been messing around in DAW since I was 15 and in a band.
RR: How does it feel to be the first Asian artist to perform main stage at Creamfields?
YAKO: It was like a dream come true , everything came so unexpectedly. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given in my career so far and excited for what we have planned for 2020.
RR: How do you feel the electronic scene in China differentiates from other parts of the world?
YAKO: To be honest, the Asia music scene is a bit behind the western world in terms of what’s currently popular. But there is still a lot of amazing music coming out of Asia. It just needs to be discovered and Asian artists need to be given more opportunities to show off what they have.
RR: What artists do you look at for inspiration when producing music?
YAKO: Flume , Daftpunk, Rl grime ,Zhu
RR: Is there a specific sound you strive for in your productions?
YAKO: I usually try to work with some unique/weird bass sounds and guitar elements. I want to always be able to offer something different through my music so when it seems right, I try to incorporate some lesser known Asian instruments as well.
RR: Tell me a little bit about new projects that you have in the works.
YAKO: I have a few exciting collab tracks I’ve been working on with some of my favorite producers that should be ready to release soon, stay tuned!
RR: You just wrapped up a performance at Electric Zoo in NYC, was this your first time in NYC?
YAKO: This was my second time in NYC. It has a similar vibe to my hometown, Hong Kong.
RR: What are you looking to accomplish within the next year?
YAKO: One of my main focuses for next year is to release my debut EP and show everybody who Yako is and what I represent. I definitely am also looking forward to traveling around the world playing different festivals, meeting cool people and animals, and representing China on a global stage.
