Deadline.com has reported that Zac Efron & Emily Ratajkowski have been recruited to star in an EDM focused film titled “We Are Your Friends.” Efron is widely known for his acting in titles such as “High School Musical” and “17 Again” while Ratajkowski has made her mark by appearing in Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” music video after landing a lead role in “Gone Girl” opposite Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
Over the last year there has been a lot of talk about electronic dance music targeted screen productions, though nothing has really come to life as of yet. Overall, I’m sure that no one is surprised that Hollywood is continuing to try and get a cut of the EDM cash cow.
“We Are Your Friends” is set to be directed by MTV’s Catfish series co-star, Max Joseph. Shooting will start on August 18th in the San Fernando Valley. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. does a great job summing up the idea for this project:
“The film is a coming-of age-drama about finding your voice. It’s szacet in the worlds of electronic music and the Hollywood nightlife, where an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie. With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he knows he’s destined for. Good call, setting up a Saturday Night Fever-like story in EDM, a vastly popular pursuit with the young crowd that several studios are trying to capture on screen. She’s repped by Innovative Artists and Untitled Entertainment” – Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr.
The film has been listed on imdb.com and projected to be complete sometime during 2015.
