DC and Hooks, Zeds Dead, are back again with this new ‘Hot Sauce’ EP. The duo have returned to their roots after releasing two collaborations with Omar Linx. This multi-genre EP will remind fans of why they fell in love with Zeds Dead in the first place – because it brings back their original sounds.
‘Demons’, the first song on the EP is a dark glitch hop track with heavy synths, it is followed by, ‘Mr. Sub’ which sounds similar to their tribal sounding record ‘Rumble In The Jungle‘ which was released in 2011. Note – while these two tracks are not groundbreaking, they are still super solid productions. In my opinion the songs towards the end of the EP are much more memorable.
The “trap-influenced” tune titled ‘Playa’ has caused a stir online among listeners. While the track clearly has a strong hip-hop influence, I wouldn’t necessarily call it trap. This is what the pair had to say on Twitter:
FOR FUCK SAKES PPL JUST BECAUSE THERE’S AN 808 OR A HI HAT IN A SONG DOESN’T MEAN ITS TRAP!”
and then later they stated:
I fuck with trap, there’s no trap on our new EP. If you NEED to classify some of the songs just make something up.”
People often forget – or don’t know – that Zeds Dead began making hip-hop under the name Mass Productions, they released the album ‘Fresh Beats’ in 2008. However, ‘Playa’ is simply an example of their hip-hop background influencing their new music. The last two songs ‘Rave’ and ‘Trouble’ round off the EP with hard hitting breaks and heavy dubstep – ‘Trouble’ is hands down the strongest record out of them all.
