Widely-renowned Canadian electronic music artist, Joel Zimmerman (best known by the alias of Deadmau5) may be notorious for his brash outspokenness on social media, however, it should not go unnoticed that he has had a fair few “good guy” moments that have caught the attention of the scene. Always one to put his fans (which he fondly refers to as ‘The Horde’) first, and make the effort to keep them involved, Deadmau5′ sense of compassion is quite admirable, and accordingly, we’ve compiled a list of five noteworthy “good guy Mau5” moments:
1. Giving a fan a hand after he was attacked leaving a Toronto DJing competition
Most recently, Joel heard about a fan named Zac Campbell, who was stabbed, and then robbed of his DJing equipment after leaving a DJing competition in Toronto, and decided to help him out by buying him a brand new laptop along with some software essentials, explaining the situation through a Tumblr post.
2. Helping out fans selling homemade replica Mau5heads get some tickets to a show
A group of fans outside a venue in Bangalore, India were trying to garner enough cash for tickets to a Deadmau5 show by selling some Mau5heads that they had made themselves. Joel took notice, and gave them tickets to the show in addition to purchasing a Mau5head for himself.
3. Making an 8-year-old Deadmau5 fan’s dream of meeting his idol come true
Although quite young, Darius proved himself to be a very dedicated Deadmau5 fan, having committed himself to making creative drawings of the Mau5head each day leading up to a concert in his area. Joel saw his work via Twitter, and not surprisingly, was very impressed. He even met up with Darius, and agreed to compile a book full of his drawings.
4. Playing a make-up show in Miami for $1, and donating the revenue to charity
After playing a club show in Miami, Deadmau5 expressed his dismay at all the “bottle poppers” saturating the front row, who were glued to their phones for much of the duration of the set. A different Miami club (who happened to be owned by the same company…) felt bad about the incident, and allowed him to play a show with free tickets. Joel opted to have the tickets cost $1, which would be donated to the Miami Children’s Hospital.
5. Attempting to sell his iconic “Purrari” and donating a portion to the Toronto Humane Society
Notorious for his unsurpassed trolling abilities, Deadmau5′ Ferrari 458 Spider adorned in a flamboyant Nyancat wrap (widely known as “The Purrari”) was all the rage when it first hit the streets of Toronto. Having been the setting for Joel’s renowned “Coffee Run” videos, and having even been taken on the exhilarating trek from Miami to Ibiza in the Gumball 3000 rally, it was fairly big news when he announced that he would be selling it. In the ad posted on Craigslist, Joel stated that anything over the $380 000 asking price would be given to the Toronto Humane Society:
Selling the majestic Purrari… asking 380k OBO … anything over 380 goes to charity, so get those bids in! (Toronto Humane Society) … we will personally invite the buyer to Toronto to come and film a “farewell purrari” coffee run with me…we will ship this thing anywhere in north america. um… also… car stuff… it has like 6500 miles on it… purrs like a nyancat. and can be fully factory restored (wrap removed) if you’re a pussy.”
