A steady 128 bpm drops in, crashing synths lead into a sound that is soothing to those familiar with Group Therapy, and suddenly the beat drops out. An even more familiar voice drops in that is known to beckon tears of joy and belting of words that people know and love so much, they’ve tattooed it on themselves. “You can never take my soul…” is the rebellious moniker to the track, which we can easily tell is true, with the way Richard Bedford sings with so much of it. A steady clap reunites the angelic vocals to the building beat and background humming, until finally you are entranced into letting it all out with a drop like only Above & Beyond can produce.
“Northern Soul” is the third single off Above & Beyond’s newest album Common Ground, due out January 26th, 2018. The track marks the long awaited reunion of Above & Beyond and Richard Bedford, the voice of classics “Alone Tonight,” “Thing Called Love,” and “Sun & Moon.” The track is an ode to the Motor City, Detroit, which is known for many things throughout it’s controversial history, but most significantly for us, dance music.
“We’ve had ties to Detroit since before we met. Along with the world’s best chrome wheels the city gave us all such sweet soul music, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Stevie Wonder and the rest of the legendary Tamla Motown alumni, The Parliaments, Patti Smith, The White Stripes and Eminem – the list is endless. And let’s not forget techno, without whom etc. So we’re all hugely indebted to Detroit.”
“We tried a lot of singers, many of them great in their own way, but you have to hand it to Richard Bedford – his performance is fabulous and real and human – above all he makes it believable.” -Above & Beyond, Tony McGuinness.
The boys are are also kicking off a North American album tour starting on December 29th at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and making stops in D.C., Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Atlanta, and many more. Check the full list below, and grab your tickets here.
