British producer Alex Metric’s ‘Ammunition’ Pt. 2 EP came out the other day on OWSLA, it features three original tracks and a slew of remixes. It’s an exercise in genre-hopping from the get go, with the dark, screeching electro-house vibes of ‘Prophecies’ opening the EP. ‘Motion Study’, has a Justice-meets-disco vibe, courtesy of Oliver, a duo who also landed a guest spot on A-Trak’s ‘Tuna Melt’ EP. ‘Rave Weapon’,” previously seen on the original ‘Ammunition’ EP, rounds out the originals with an electro-breaks flourish.
Then come the ‘Rave Weapon’ remixes, which comprise the latter half of the EP. The only standout for me was a chilled-out, nu-disco tweak by Aeroplane. The Belgian producer kept most of the original’s composition, accenting it with a funky kick. Mark Starr and UZ both attempt to trap out the track, with varying degrees of success. Starr retains much of the original rhythm, turning in a techy trap tune that really never gets started. UZ goes all out, with a frenetically paced intro and a solid first drop. From there on it devolves into the standard frenzy of high hats and kicks, I’m left wanting more from what began as a pretty good remix.
