If TAUK isn’t a name you are familiar with yet it’s about time they were put on your radar. The New York based quartet is composed of Matt Jalbert on the guitar, bassist Charlie Dolan, Alric “A.C.” Carter on the keyboard-organ, and drummer Isaac Teel. The boys have been playing together since their high school days, and the time together and apart (while separated in college) has allowed for their sound to grow as a individuals and then coalesce into the jammy, riff ripping sound we hear today.
Their latest album Collisions is a 10-track collection of instrumental tracks that feature a ton of different elements from ripping guitar lines, funky percussion, and melodic textures that flow together to please the ear. On Collisions we’re given songs like “Friction” and “The Drop” which stand out because of the variety of sounds on the tracks. Collisions is, to me, a bit of a darker and more driven album than their previous, Homunculus. On Homunculus, we have two favorites like the uplifting “Afro-Tonic” and dynamic “The Chemist“. Both albums are an enjoyable experience and journey the whole way through.
Recently TAUK has been gaining traction by saddling up and touring with Dopapod this December and Umphrey’s Mcgee in January of 2015. Besides STS9 and Papadosio (who they will be playing with for a couple stops in Ohio) Dopapod and Umph are a perfect sonic connection for TAUK. Their sound would also fit in at festivals like Electric Forest, Catskill Chill, Bella Terra, and Camp Bisco, to name a few. Be sure to check them out on their tour, NYE with the Disco Biscuits, and if they’re in your area!
