While flipping around on the internet the other day I came across something both interesting and inspiring. Pictured below is a forum post by user Timberman from 2007 on the site forum.studio.se, a site for Scandanavian songwriters and composers. After translating the page from Swedish to English (which explains the rough sentence structure) you can see that user Timberman asked the forum for their thoughts on his music, and received no response. About two weeks later Timberman bumped the thread to try to get more attention, but again received no response.
If you click here for the actual page and click the link in the original post, you can see that the link takes you to Avicii’s Myspace page. This confirms that it was indeed Avicii aka Tim Berling (Timberman) asking for feedback on his music to an unresponsive audience.
Seeing this post inspired me for a few reasons. I picture a then 17-year-old Tim Berling sitting in his room or basement making music and trying to see what the world thinks, only be to denied. What is most impressive to me is that he bumped the thread himself two weeks later, and still no response.
Imagine if he had thrown in the towel there. Sold his equipment and called it a day. He wouldn’t have made “Levels” four years later, been nominated for two Grammys, headlined some of the biggest music festivals in the world, or bought this incredible 15 million dollar home in L.A. earlier this year. Most importantly, he wouldn’t have brought people happiness and joy through his music.
We all have the opportunity to do something great with our lives. I know it sounds cliche, but greatness isn’t something that comes easily. It takes hard work, perseverance, and desire. It takes bumping your own thread in the hope that someone sees it tomake your dream a reality. Another cliche, but if you’re reading this and have a dream, the last thing you think about before you close your eyes to go to sleep, go after it. Don’t be afraid to bump yourself, who knows maybe you’re the next Avicii?
