Gravitas Recordings is one of the most visionary labels out there at the moment, carefully picking releases that are constantly innovative and unique. On Tuesday, Bassline Drift became the latest pioneers with their full length debut, Proximity.
Since the duo’s acoustic instruments and vocals are more the LP’s focus, rather than bass or drums, it is almost hard to call it an electronic album. Never the less, production tools such as reverb, audio-reversal and other effects play a heavy hand in enhancing this album’s acoustic elements. This isn’t to say that there aren’t some heavy moments on this album, in fact the opposite is true; songs like “Nature” and “Dhumavati” will knock your socks off with deep and immersive bass that will rattle your subwoofer.
But while the album’s sound is certainly well refined, the LP shines brightest in the unique musical ideas the duo pursues. Perhaps one of the best ideas is “Scoundrel”, a melancholy piano centered duet that has somewhat of a saloon vibe to it, all about an unfaithful partner that refuses to change.
No great electronic LP would be complete without a couple remixes, and on Proximity, “Kermode” and “Nanda” fulfill that need magnificently. The two producer’s remixes maintain the same chilling and atmospheric feeling that the rest of the album holds, while building upon their respective tracks to make them more dance floor ready.
It is clear that with this album, Bassline Drift has laid down the foundation for what is sure to be a long-lasting and fruitful career. Here at RaverRafting we look forward to hearing how their future ventures develop an already unique and refreshing sound.
