The eclectic producer Bleep Bloop continues to bend and break boundaries in bass music with the release of “Gun Chatta” and “Kodos”, the latter of which is a collaboration with G Jones, Bleep Bloop’s friend and partner in wobbly crime.
“Gun Chatta” features slamming 808 kicks, crisp snares and running hi hats coupled with the melodic, dancing synthesizer lines which Bleep Bloop is known for. “Kodos” is similar, but the percussion is even heavier and tuned to an absolutely grimy pitch. This is matched by an equally grimy synth bass line from G Jones. The wide bass fills up the track, but Bleep Bloop’s pops and buzzes jab through it all to create a confusing yet exciting soundscape that could have only been concocted by these two young producers.
Being inside “Gun Chatta” is like swimming through a flooded, malfunctioning space station while listening to reggae. The artists’ sound cloud references “mutilated club music”, and we’re happy to agree. As his name implies, Bleep Bloop delves into aqueous sounds which pop in rapid succession to form rolling melodies. The percussion is heavy and prominent like all trap music, but his well-pitched and amorphous drum lines take things to a new experimental level. The Jamaican shotta chant seems to reference the tune’s heritage in original dub and dubstep, music which, like “Gun Chatta”, creates sonic spaces through the loose interaction of drums, bass and synthesizers.
The tracks were released this morning through SMOG Records, a small Los Angeles label that is on top of west coast bass music. You can catch Bleep Bloop at Shambhala Music Festival or Symbiosis Gathering, or with G Jones in Milwaukee at the Miramar on August 1.
