So Halloween is fast approaching 50 days to be exact, and the choices for festivals that weekend are endless. My personal choice is Voodoo Festival in NOLA.
In City Park one of the largest most visited parks in the U.S. this Halloween weekend you can catch some great acts including The Chainsmokers, Gramatik, Porter Robinson, and Snails.
EDM is one of the most artist heavy genres in 2016 line – up for Voodoo, but it definitely did not start out that way.
History runs deep in the veins of this festival. The festival was started in 1999 with a line up that included Dr.John who has since become a Voodoo veteran making an appearance every few years, Train, and Third Eye Blind. The ultimate alternative 90’s line-up that makes my young high school heart go pitter patter.
Voodoo first introduced EDM to the line-up in 2001 with DJ Craze and A-Trak. DJ Craze at the time was the holder of the DMC World DJ Championship title three years running, and A-Trak was the youngest person to ever win the DMC award at age 15. The EDM roots were dug in deep because each consecutive year Voodoo added more and more DJs and artists to the lineup.
In 2003 RJD2 and DJ Dan graced the line-up, DJ Logic spun in 2004 which was the year he released his John Popper Project album, and in 2007 known to some as “The Godfather of EDM” Tiesto was brought to the stages of Voodoo.
With a festival that has lasted this long you have the monumental years, but you also have the trying years. In 2005 the festival was affected by Hurricane Katrina, but even a natural disaster could not stop this train from rolling. Instead of moving to Memphis, Tn the coordinators of Voodoo decided what better way to thank the relief workers than holding a show in their honor.
Voodoo Festival has twice been nominated for festival of the year and with such a historic background I can definitely see why.
The festival will be celebrating its 16th year of bringing an eclectic mix of all genres of music to the “Big Easy.” I have a feeling once you go it will be become a Halloween tradition.
You can purchase your tickets here.
3-Day GA passes run at $140 and 1-Day GA passes are currently at $70. Act fast their will be a price increase within the coming weeks.
