Two guys who are now legends in the house music game, since their entry in the 1990’s, have sat down with WRR for an in-depth exclusive interview.
But interviews aren’t the only thing the duo have been working on. Just this week Chocolate Puma dropped a new track via Spinnin’ Records, entitled “I Could Be Wrong,” which fuses deep and future house elements in an abstract, but super fresh way – another track that showcases the strong, yet chill vibes Chocolate Puma is able to deliver.
Zki and Dobre have a massive catalog of tunes they’ve compiled over the years, all with zesty originality and great flavor. Learn more about Chocolate Puma at the bottom of this post and dive into our exclusive interview here.
What do you think some of the biggest differences between European and American EDM is generally?
House music was invented and is heavily rooted in America, but it wasn’t till a few years back that it caught on big time in the form of what we now call EDM. And America did it big and bold. In Europe it has been quite mainstream since the beginning of the 90s, so you could say there is a big chunk of the scene that has time to mature a bit. At the same time there is still young kids all over the world discovering music and going out for the first time, and that feeling is quite universal.
What are some future house tracks or artists you find to be cutting-edge at the moment?
There is this kid Novka from Croatia who is making some super dope music at the moment.
What genres of music did both of you grow up on?
It goes from disco to punk & from hip hop to house, you could say we’ve always been very open for any kind of good music
Will you be working with any new artists and/or labels this upcoming summer or winter?
We have just signed to Spinnin’ Records and we also have releases coming this year on Dim Mak and Mix Mash. We’ve finished new tracks with Laidback Luke and Tommie Sunshine, and we’ve been into the studio with Oliver Heldens.
What sounds/style/genres are you most excited to focus on currently?
House with huge basslines, but still within our own style.
How does the creative process flow between you two?
After 25 years it’s almost flowing by itself, so we don’t need too much words. We can read each other’s body language very good, so we feel when something is good. And although we have differences in our taste, it always seems to walk in sync.
How do you decide if your next track will be more on the chill side or more on the harder side?
We like both the harder and chill side of music, but when we start making a track we rarely decide what it’s gonna be. We just fool around with drums, sounds and melodies and let the inspiration flow without overthinking too much. So we automatically come up with either of those, we almost never now when this is gonna happen.
Where do you see streaming music going? For example, do you think soundcloud will stay around?
Streaming music is very much happening right now, especially on mobile phones. Personally we love SoundCloud. We were one of the first users and out of every social media platform we use, we have the most followers on SoundCloud. You’ll never know if it will stick around, and we do think SoundCloud needs to keep improving, but for now we love it (when they don’t take down our track that is haha). For us as DJs we don’t think there will be a shift towards streaming yet. We still rely on playing on Pioneer CDJs with plus SD card with our music on it.
What are you most excited for in the next 1-2 years?
Our music has always been house in one form or another, so it’s nice to notice that more and more people are discovering it, be it for the first time, or again. We think that in the next one or two years it will only get bigger and better. New producers are already inventing their version of house, EDM producers throwing their energy in it, dubstep producers coming up with crazy bassline house. So yeah, we’re very excited about that.
