By combining the aspects of live instruments, electrohiphopsoul and dubstep, Conspirator may have changed the way we look at dubstep. The tracks on their new EP Unleashed (read our review) represent a magnificent forward thinking release that pushes the boundaries of many genres and effectively breaks through the noise.
Check out the interview below where we talk about their forming, festival / club sets and more. Also if you’re in the South East, you have a chance to win tickets to their show at the Music Farm on February 11.

What prompted Biscuit members (Aron and Marc) to start Conspirator? What is the goal (if there is any) for Conspirator as a band when it comes to performing for audiences versus The Disco Biscuits?
It was during some time off in 2004. Aron and I were trying to kill some time and learn more about electronic production, in part so that we could expand as musicians and in part because we were so heavily into the electronic scene. The goal of conspirator is to being the party every night, day in and day out.
What’s different when you guys perform it is a multiple set/multiple day run (Bisco Inferno, City Bisco, Mayan Holidayze, Camp Bisco)? When you play these types of sets, what’s the mindset you’re in? Do you believe that it is within these longer sets that your music can be properly communicated?
We adapt no matter what the situation is. If its 45 minutes we will crush you and if its 4 days of 4 hours a day, we will also crush you!
I’ve seen you guys play about four times (one of them being a collaboration with Big Gigantic and Underground Orchestra at Gathering of the Vibes: The Gigantic Underground Conspiracy) and play both small and larger venues. Which type of show do you guys like to play over the other?
I love playing both the big shows and the small shows equally. The big shows are nice because they sort of validate all of that hard work, but you just can’t replace the sheer intensity of an intimate show at the Fox Theater in Boulder Colorado.
Your new EP “Unleashed” features much more dubstep influences and has a harder electronic feel to it. Why is that?
We are just exploring as many new kinds of electronic music as possible. We don’t want to put it in a box, but there are definitely some tasteful and melodic dubstep influences in there.
Today music listeners are changing more rapidly and music has made a dramatic shift in terms of the number of styles, genres, and subgenres. When you’re in the studio preparing a new track, do you think about pleasing the fans with your music? Or do you create just to create?
If we were doing this to please our fans we wouldn’t have any fans. It’s all about writing for yourself and the people will follow. It has to come from the heart.
What’s the story behind the naming of the song “Tumblr”?
It was a basic case of misspelling the word and it luckily was misspelled to something that autocorrect recognizes. Tumblr.
In terms of influences and music taste, what was the last album you guys heard that impressed you?
The flux pavilion album that came out last week is pretty sick!
What are your thoughts on the current state of the music industry and music itself? These days, it is pretty easy to upload a song onto Soundcloud or a personal blog and be your own promoter, manager, and representation. Do you think that the live show will be what “saves” musicians in terms of gaining profit off their music and breaking through the static noise of the Internet?
It has never been easy to break through the noise. It’s all about staying true to yourself, touring relentlessly, and most importantly, making sick music that actually cuts through the noise.
What do you guys do when you aren’t playing a show or touring? Does that ever happen?
We write music when we aren’t on tour, and hang with our families, coach baseball, clean the house, work out, all the regular things that a modern homemaker does, you know, but mostly we write music and plan the tours.
What else can we anticipate from Conspirator? Another album? A new remix? A side project with Trey Anastasio ;)?
We are right in the middle of the next phase of Conspirator. Hitting the charts, reaching the blogs, spreading the gospel. There is always new music on the horizon, and there is always a new phase just beyond the corner.
