Secret Panda Society will make a bass heavy appearance at Dancefestopia this year and may violate any “no wake” zones associated with the Missouri River while they’re at it. The duo hailing from Baltimore, Md is comprised of Rob Stern and Joe Benny, who wreaks havoc on the drum set in live performances.
Dynamic in their production, SPS infuses multiple genres with their unique take on sound. One minute these guys are morphing Stevie Nicks’ ‘White Wing Dove’ into a choppy club bass dance thriller and the next minute they are tweaking Yelawolf’s ‘Daddy’s Lambo’ into an electro banger. (Yelawolf is also performing at Dancefestopia…maybe we could get a little stage collab for this??).
I’m hesitant to generalize SPS as “dubstep”, however, I won’t deny that it may be their most dominant audio trait. A few elements separate the duo from the broad social grouping which is the recently popular ‘contemporary dubstep’, if you will. First and foremost, Rob and Joe bring live instrumentation to stage performances. Like Big G or M83, no true fan of music can feel anything but mad love for this aspect.
Reason 2 – a healthy dosage and balance of quality remixes and original production. This is crucial and really shows that they can do it all and be good at it; A testament to their skills as producers.
Reason 3 – As mentioned, the wide variety of genres that are worked with. The biggest mistake an artist can make is to play it safe. I’d call remixing Stevie Nicks anything but “playing it safe”.
