After weeks of anticipation, Deadmau5 has just launched his new subscription-based website – live.deadmau5.com – which serves as a centralized hub for fans. This unique and innovative platform enables fans to stay up to date with Deadmau5′ news and music, as well as gives them the opportunity to interact candidly with the Mau5 himself.
Deadmau5 has always been renowned for his transparency with fans, and many would remember the hours spent watching him work on new music while on Ustream, as well his highly-opinionated (and entertaining!) Twitter feed (which he deactivated about a month ago). Joel Zimmerman (the man underneath the mau5head) has expressed his inspiration and reasoning behind this site:
“I was inspired to come up with a plan to help me bring my fans from abroad all social media sites that I’ve been using, under one roof. For sanities sake really. I imagined all the services I have used previously, why I used them, and why I needed to use 3 different services to express myself in various ways… and then after I figured that out, I had to ask myself why I needed to use so many different platforms? Twitter for mind vomit, Instagram for photos, SoundCloud for music… just seems kinda silly. But for some reason, it’s artist / industry practice to use Twitter / FB / SoundCloud and Instagram.”
This platform is very forward, and comprehensive, with a section for live streams, photos, videos, a general message board, news updates, free downloads of older, as well as unreleased music, and perhaps most notably, a live chat feature that randomly selects a small group of users to engage in an instant-message conversation with Joel. Deadmau5 has been bouncing around ideas for such a platform for several months on his Twitter feed, and would often discuss the topic during interviews. The launch of this site has ultimately managed to actualize many of his longterm goals, which he defined in the following statement:
“My long term and ‘out there’ dream of this site / application would be to kinda transform and create my own music distribution model, making what would be an independent artist, truly, independent of other unified and non unified systems.”
Of course, such a service can’t be offered completely free of charge, and although anyone can create an account for free, and view some of the content, they will have to pay a fee of $4.99 per month to gain full access to the site’s features (i.e livestreams, downloads, and the chance to participate in chats). This may appear as a drawback for some, however the paid subscription will ensure that only real fans will have access to the site, as well as keep haters at bay.
Although Deadmau5 often jokingly referred to the site as the “Suckscription” on Reddit, it is safe to say that this platform is definitely far from “suck-ish”. It is beyond question that Deadmau5 takes his relationship with his fan base very seriously, and it is quite uplifting to witness such a successful artist take the time to connect with their dedicated fans. The launch of this site enables fans to gain insight into Deadmau5′ creative process, and gives them the unparalleled opportunity to interact with him in a personal manner. Joel also conveyed this notion to fans by stating:
“If I had to pick a favorite [aspect], I’d have to give that one to my fans, and visitors, who will undoubtedly help make it a much more entertaining place through our interactions.”
