Progressive house/trance music producing duo Disfunktion released their newest album called ‘We Were Young And Needed The Money’ last month and it’s all we have been waiting for. The Amsterdam based duo started spinning tunes together across the country in 2007 and nowadays they are known for their unique international sound, working with several record labels, including Armada for this one.
‘We Were Young And Needed The Money’ contributes to Disfunktion’s style and is produced in cooperation with several artists, such as Mike James, Fehrplay, Franklin, Mr Wilson and many more! The tracks contain melodic and airy tunes, sounding floating yet very powerfull with strong vocals indicating the sound of freedom that creates the good atmosphere of the songs. They could be marked as club music with style, containing electronic sounds, fast beats and easy yet darker instrumental parts. It indicates space and the album creates a good ascending, nicely build piece of music.
RaverRafting got the opportunity to ask Disfunktion a few questions about their album and their experiences while producing it. Check out their answers below in this exclusive interview and be sure to peep ‘We Were Young And Needed The Money’, out now via Armada Music.
What were your inspiration sources for producing ‘We Were Young And Needed The Money’?
We definitely had a lot of inspiration for this album, ranging from Eric Prydz to Hard Rock Sofa. We wanted to make a collection of tracks that we feel represents where we are at right now. With the spectrum ranging from ‘Nova’ with Fehrplay to our upcoming track ‘First Light’ we feel we have done just that and think that we can give the listener something worthwile.
How did you come up with the name of the album?
We actually wanted to create a ‘serious’ album with some badass music and cool collaborations so we figured we had to put a little joke in there somewhere. Bart actually mentioned it quite early when we were thinking of names and it always sticked with us. Doing what we do means doing what we love the most, but also has a lot of uncertainty. The expression ‘I was young and needed the money’ refers to doing silly stuff you might not be proud of, like stripping your way through college. Which is funny because this album is exactly the opposite, as making it was such a labour of love we would probably do it without even getting any money for it.
What was the collaboration with the other artists like, during the production of the album?
We actually met Jonas (Fehrplay), with who we did ‘Nova’, at the legendary Burning Man Festival in Reno, Nevada two years ago where we were staying at the same camp. We just had a blast with him and last year we were there again and so was he. So we decided we just needed to get together and make some music. We then hooked up during the Amsterdam Dance Event and did two studio sessions with some truffle pizza and beers and Nova was born. Jonas actually put the finishing touches on the track a few weeks later in New York, so the track went from Burning Man to Amsterdam to New York.
The album is full of amazing sounds. What makes the album special, according to you?
We wanted to make a collection of tracks that we feel represents where we are at right now. With the spectrum ranging from ‘Nova’ with Fehrplay to our upcoming track ‘First Light’ we feel we have done just that and think that we can give the listener something worthwile.
What is the purpose of the album to you? Is it designed for partying?
We hope all our music inspires partying as it is one of our favourite things to do! We also wanted to stay true to the music we love and just make stuff because we like t and not because we are aiming at charts. We just hope the listener enjoys what we made and does what he wants, be it chill out or party hard!
Would you prefer your upcoming track to be more rough or more chill out?
Our single that is out now, called ‘First Light’, is definitely a bit more rough. We do however have some more progressive singles coming up, which might be easier to chill out on 😀 You guys are called one of the brightest DJ/Producer duos in your genre.
What was your official break through, in your opinion?
Great that people are calling us that ;D We feel we still need to break through though. We just want as many people as possible to hear the stuff we come up with in the studio and on stage, so we still have our work cut out for us we think! Making a steady stream of music is what has always helped us in getting our name out there, also working with good labels like Armada is really important and helps. You were young and needed the money once.
Can you give some advice to young producers from nowadays?
Just do what feels right! There is going to be so much competition around you, which makes it important to make sure you enjoy the process. Even if you dont ‘succeed’ you will at least have had a good time. And that is what is most important, music needs to be fun!
Do you both feel like you have expressed your own parts in the album?
Very much so! We have really had so much studiotime together for this album, that it really feels like the story is coming from both of us. We are also both really proud of the end-result!
What is your favorite kind of music and who are your favorite artists?
We really love progressive stuff like Prydz, but we also like more punchy stuff like Hard Rock Sofa or Will K.
Who are the best music producers in your genre at the moment, besides you guys?
Big fans of Fehrplay, Axwell, Audien and Jeremy Olander
What was the most exciting experience you went through together so far?
We just got back from a great show in Shanghai at club Muse, which was definitely in the top 5! But the best experience was definitely playing at Burning Man festival after Diplo and before Paul Oakenfold. Such a great crowd and energy!
What were the most fun aspects to work on with the production of the album?
It was cool to see the things Jonas did and showed us. When we are in the studio with another producer, it is always cool to see what sort of things they do differently or the same. We always keep learning and that is what keeps it fun!
What is your favorite track of ‘We Were Young And Needed The Money’ and why?
We cant really say hahaha. Its like picking a favorite child 😀 We love them all the same!
What more can we expect from you? Where do you see yourselves in two years?
More show, and bigger! A new album with Armada next year. a new upcoming collab with Jochen Miller and an upcoming remix for Trevor Guthrie (who did the vocals on Armin’s ‘This is what it feels like’
