The DJ Mag Top 100 list has finally been announced and Armin van Buuren has claimed the #1 DJ stop for the fifth time. Coming in second is one of dance music’s heroes, Tiesto, who has recently launched a new headphone line with AKG. Avicii snags #3 and David Guetta falls three places to #4. It may comes as a surprise to see Deadmau5 sitting at #5 (ironic?) because of all the comments he has made about modern DJ’s. Regardless, I’m still thrilled to see him up there, especially since his album ‘<album title goes here>’ is filled with extraordinary records. Hardwell reaches #6, which comes as no surprise to me, with the release of his massive 60+ track bootleg pack in August, and with several huge productions like ‘Zero 76’ and ‘How We Do’. He has the perfect arsenal to ‘wow’ crowds worldwide. #7 goes to Dash Berlin who played a massive show at Governors Island in NYC earlier this year and Above & Beyond grabs #8. I was happy to see Afrojack at #9 because of all the touring he has done this past year. Finally, to finish off the top 10 we have Skrillex, who has moved from using Abelton with a mixer to CDJ’s (so I suppose he deserves it).
The list features talents old and new. Daft Punk maintain their legendary status at #44 without evening performing live for an audience this year. Meanwhile, Nicky Romero becomes the highest new entry on that chart at #17, leading young stars like Porter Robinson (#40), Zedd (#51), and Madeon (#54).
What is there to say about the list overall? Every year the DJ Mag Top 100 is controversial, and there is no way around it. The rankings are the result of the opinions of dance music fans around the globe, which may explain why incredibly popular American artists like Bassnectar and Dillon Francis did not break into the top 100. Furthermore, the DJs campaign for votes in this poll with varying intensity. While most will make mention of it in podcasts or on social media, some clearly pursue a high placement more commonly than others.
For those who aren’t too invested in the results, it is not hard to understand why. The credentials of a ‘Top 100 DJ’ are vague. Is it based on the quality of one’s productions? Or quantity of productions? Or is it based on actually spinning ability? How do you account for the myriad of styles and methods out there? (Note: many DJs who use turntables, like A-Trak and Fatboy Slim, fell below the 100 rank).
At the end of the day, you will continue to support and listen to the DJs that you love, no matter what number is next to their name. If anything, the list may help you discover some new talents. But if names are get stacked on top of one another like this every year, it would help to know exactly what qualities determine a top 100 DJ.
