Blurry have become the lines between artist and imitator. In a world ravished by never ending remixes, emotionless mixes and mediocre melodies, DJing has quickly nestled itself as one of the world’s most common channels of expression.
However, the experienced brush strokes of an accomplished painter will always reveal his true skill. Gesaffelstein, whose name means “ideal work of art” in German as well as an homage to Einstein, illustrates his own unique tale through his perplexing, and often dark and moody compositions.
Aggressive, haunting, and beautifully addictive, his sounds are an intricate collective of momentous electronic rhythm. There is a significant amount of depth in each melody, an authentic representation of the French disco/techno scene. Often times, strong, funky synths lead boisterous claps into a winding hard electro whirlwind.
There’s an unblemished sense of modernism here, yet enough vintage devices and samples to give his sound a cultured, old world feeling. There exists a prime execution of European techno in his music, something one wouldn’t hear in a typical EDM setting.
WhiteRaverRafting is glad to see Gesaffelstein return to the spotlight after a lengthy hiatus. Releasing his Aleph album less than a year ago, “In Distress” with A$AP Rocky and two songs off of Kanye West’s album Yeezus (“Black Skinhead” and “Send It Up”), the artist is making moves in a long awaited comeback. You can catch his rare American performance at Electric Zoo this year, make sure to get your tickets now! General Admission starts at $99!
