Brendan Angelides, aka bass music feels master Eskmo, has partnered with other creators to develop FEELHARMONIC, an audio-visual presentation which can actually allow people who are deaf to experience sound through, what else, bass vibrations. The program relies on a Tactile Bass system developed by SubPac which allows people to feel the physical dimension of sound. This system then interacts with a visual presentation to really set off the experience. FEELHARMONIC is the first community outreach program from the Echo Society, a musical collective based in Los Angeles of which Eskmo is a co-founder.
We know what it feels like to be shaken by the bass weight at a concert. Depending on the musician’s angle, it can be fun, confusing, profound, even intimidating. Yet there’s no reason for one who cannot hear to attend a concert, so one would never take the opportunity to feel music even though that sensory experience IS available. That’s why FEELHARMONIC is so helpful. It brings the musical experience directly to deaf populations, coupled with a visual production to enhance and reinforce the sound. In the video from feelharmonic.org you can see the joy on the faces of the San Diego kids who experienced Angelides’ first demonstration.
Eskmo’s project is heading to Los Angeles next, and though it’s an expensive production the implications of this project are enormous. We wish the best of luck to him as he continues to serve his community with music.
