From the man who really needs no introduction (but here’s a little refresher in case you do), West Coast producer G Jones has finally dropped the first single off his new EP and it definitely does not disappoint.
“Apollo” is a welcome addition to the catalog of outer-spacey, 8-bit bangers that Mr. Jones has rapidly been accumulating over the past three years, and it’s clear within seconds of pressing play that the Santa Clara native has no intention of slowing down. Chock full of pounding 808s, gritty bass lines, and deliciously syncopated percussion, if you’re looking for a little trap with your genre-bending bass music, then surely look no further. Take it from us, who had the pleasure of hearing this gem pre-release at F.A.R.M Fest last weekend, “Apollo” is sure to be a volatile inclusion in any set.
G Jones’s hybrid approach not only ignores the boundaries of conventional genres, but also continues to push the limits on what underground music is capable of. While normally deemed too strange or inaccessible for basic audiences, with appearances spanning from Bassnectar Red Rocks to a midnight timeslot at Shambhala scheduled for just this summer alone, clearly G Jones did not receive the memo. Thankfully, it seems that as electronic music has continued to evolve, pioneers of its growth have begun to gain the recognition and following they rightfully deserve. Especially if they’ve been putting in the work all day, much like Greg (or Footsie) himself.
You can grab a high quality download of “Apollo” below. The entire EP, fittingly titled That Odd EP In the Pit of My Hard Drive, is set to drop August 19th. My neighbors will be thrilled.
