GRiZ is bringing us his sixth Bangers.Zip EP to Zeds Dead’s record label, DeadBeats, and we can’t help but wonder how much more magic will be released this year. We’ve seen other impeccable bass artists on the label, such as Peekaboo, Blanke, Eprom, Subtronics, and Zeds Dead of course. With the label seeking to push the boundaries in bass music, it was only a matter of time until GRiZ found his way on the imprint. In 2020 alone, GRiZ has fought our music blues away with releases like his insanely blissful Chasing the Golden Hour, Part 3, badass single, “Medusa”, with Wreckno, fiery Bangers[5].Zip, and even gained footing in the world of house with “Could U” on Night Bass.
At this point we think Grant Kwiecinski is the superhero of EDM that we all needed during this time. Getting to see all of the different layers and inspirations come to fruition through these releases and livestreams have given fans another window into what GRiZ is. Most recently, he spear-headed a two-day virtual retreat for the third annual Camp Kulabunga, where fans could find a sense of community, empowerment, and inclusion, something we all especially need right now. All we can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.
Track one of Bangers[6].Zip, which dropped Wednesday, is “No Doubt” with Jauz. We kick it off with a a grooving beat and spooky, playful synth which is perfect with Halloween creeping up. For those that are well versed in internet meme’s and history, you will notice the track has vocal laid down from the man calling out someone as “whack”. You can study up on that video here. Packed full of wobble bass goodness, this collab track is sure to get your head bobbing.
Next up is, “Juicy”, with Blunts and Blondes, a track full of big bass energy. We get a switch up in the vibes, with a vocal chop paired with a flip of drum and bass inspired rhythm. Once we get into the swing of things, we bounce between grooving baselines, funky switch up’s, and spacey synths. We just imagine GRiZ and Blunts and Blondes shaking their hands after touching the decks because this track has so much heat. Rounding out Bangers[6].Zip is a solo GRiZ track, “Brain Fuzz”. Long time fans get the best elements of two major worlds of GRiZ’s discography: off kilter baselines, big brass horn moments, strong vocals, and a melody that pops. With this track, we definitely get more of that bass head side of GRiZ, which seems fitting with the EP dropping on the Deadbeats label.
