After what felt like ages, Nick Miller aka Illenium has finally unleashed his long awaited album, Awake. He’s been teasing tracks off it all year like “Sound of Walking Away”, “Feel Good”, and “Fractures”. The wait has been more than worth it as Illenium has graced us with 13 tracks featuring collaborations with artists like Said The Sky, Ember Island, and Gryffin. Following suit with previous tracks, Illenium has brought on some of the best female vocalists that help form the album into straight perfection. Artists like MAX, Daya, Kerli, Emilie Brandt, Nevve, RUNN, Annika Wells, and Dia Frampton all add their own specialty to the 13 track culmination.
In terms of production the album primarily leans towards the melodic bass and future bass realm. Not surprising considering Illenium is at the forefront of the future bass genre. After his collaboration on “Rush Over Me” with Seven Lions and Said The Sky, we’ve been eagerly waiting another collaboration with either of the bass producers. Luckily for us, Illenium has teamed up yet again with fellow bass producer and friend Said The Sky on, “Where’d U Go”. The track features ever popular chopped up vocals and is reminiscent of both artist’s melodic styles. Two tracks, “Taking Me Higher” and “No Time Like Now” feature no crushing drops or lush synths usually present in Illenium tracks. However, “Taking Me Higher” does showcase Illenium’s talented guitar skills and both tracks display a different production side of Miller. They add a sweet piece of variety to the album and are ideal tracks to unwind to.
Our favorite track off the entire album has to be “Lost” featuring Emile Brandt. The track kicks off with immediate goosebumps as Illenium’s signature guitar rings out. Euphoric vocals accompanied by a powerful future bass punch remind us of his “Ashes” days with ECHOS. We’re not here to rank the tracks, but if we had to pick our favorites it would be “Where’d U Go”, “Free Fall”, and “Lost”. Nonetheless, the album exceeds expectations and we couldn’t be more excited to hear it live. Now for the last time you’re crying, not us. If you haven’t listened to the album in full we advise you to do so and let the tears flow.
