It’s been a few days since Nick Miller aka Illenium released his third studio album, Ascend. In that short time the album has skyrocketed to number one on the iTunes Dance Charts and has been met with admiration by fans and fellow artists. The impressive album features 15 tracks in addition to a short album intro track and a prelude track for the collaboration with Chandler Leighton on “Lonely”. The album features collaborations from artists such as Anna Clendening, Oekiin, Annika Wells, Jon Bellion, Georgia Ku, The Chainsmokers, and Said The Sky.
To sum it up in a single sentence, the album is nothing short of perfect. We’re not here to compare the album to Ashes and Awake, however Ascend is certainly a contender for his best album yet. Fans will notice that a majority of the songs deal with heartbreak and grief which mainly contradicts the title of the album. Even still, we find this album to be his most emotional album to date and one that breaks through walls that Ashes and Awake never could. Miller has truly poured his heart and soul into this third studio album and we can feel it in every single track.
Our two favorites off the album have to be “All Together” Ft. Oekiin and “Broken Ones” Ft. Anna Clendening. Both songs are the peak tracks that emanate the emotional heartbreak displayed in the album. In “Broken Ones” we can see how it is very clearly a track dedicated to those effected by a breakup. The powerful lyrics are accompanied by a drop all too familiar with Illenium’s distinct style. We again hear about the hardship of breakups and fighting in “All Together”. The song displays a more melodic and slower feel that we feel caters to the theme of the track perfectly.
Let’s be honest, we knew this album was going to be amazing even before it was released. However, did we expect the themes of the album to resonate so closely with all of us? Absolutely not. It’s the personal connection that fans feel to this album that truly draws out its greatness and its familiarity. We highly advise listening to the album in the order of the tracks in order to feel the full effect.
Illenium will soon be embarking on his massive Ascend tour that will touch down in locations like Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden. Be sure to click here to see if he’ll be touring near you. Stream the album below and we look forward to seeing you at a tour stop.
