Joel Zimmerman, primarily known for being the man underneath the iconic Deadmau5 head, has unexpectedly released a track under the alias of “testpilot”. Diverging from his signature progressive-house sound for which he is renowned, this tune entitled “Sunspot (White Space Conflict)”, is an ominous, and stirring techno tune, which also happens to be the first release on electronic music legend Richie Hawtin’s label, “Plus 8 Records”, since 2012. Joel Zimmerman and Richie Hawtin are no strangers, having played a back-to-back set at last years edition of SXSW, as well as took part in a panel discussion together entitled Talk. Techno. Technology at the event. In a statement on the Beatport page for this track, Richie Hawtin expressed:
Its been nearly 1.5 years since the last PLUS 8 record, but it seemed fitting that this record in particular, made by a skinny white kid from Canada, became part of the labels collection and history.”
Having been a part of the rave scene since his teenage years, it is common knowledge that Joel Zimmerman is an avid fan of the techno and minimalistic genres, and some Deadmau5 fans may even recall that a nearly identical track called “Sunspot” was uploaded to Joel’s SoundCloud page a couple years back. There is no word as of yet about whether or not Joel will publicly release any more testpilot tracks in the near future, however he has teased fans by divulging that he has already made some techno tracks that have been posted anonymously:
