“Who am I to shine?” asks Late Night Alumni singer Becky Jean Williams as R/D’s remix of ‘Shine’ begins. This could have just as easily been R/D asking the question, as this track is a big moment for him. Out on Ultra Records, this remix is his first big-label release and is some of his best work.
Over the past year, R/D’s music has grown and matured from its indie bass roots. Showing both versatility in his productions and an increased clarity and professionalism to his sound, he has been on track to become a huge artist in 2013.
This remix of “Shine” is no exception. A euphoric and trancey buildup leads to a drop with an incredibly catchy melody composed of crisp and driving basslines. Instead of breaking the song down and building it up to a “drop” repeatedly, R/D surprises us here by keeping a steady rhythm throughout most of the song and incorporating the entire vocal track into his remix.
