The Irish legend that is Matador is back with his massive new Air EP. This year has already proved to be a stellar one so far for this techno maven, with a few highlights including his North American tour, two top-notch live shows at Ultra Miami and Caprices Festival, and his latest remix Eats Everything’s “Burn.” In 2017, he delivered what what many thought to be one of his most his most creatively-driven works, the fiver-tracker EP Ramaha. But now, he’s delivered what might be our favorite matador concoction yet.
Out now on Rukus, Air is a a five-track EP including “Itajai,” “Moonman,” “Surrender,” “Shamen,” amd “Air.” The EP has an overall tribal flow to it, exuding mischievous, seductive vibes that are utterly alluring. One of our favorites is the opening track “Itajai,” laden with a raspy, mid range float, and showered with modular plucks. Next up, “Moonman” we hear strings subtly build and fall with soft vocal hits hovering majestically over a tube-driven bass line, creating a warm, punchy soundscape. “Surrender’s” live, acoustic drum fills, and gliding synth lines are a call to attention. With airtight sequences and mischievous flourishes, the Irish producer deftly navigates peak time techno in smooth, sophisticated style.
The undeniable sound of the Oberheim leads the attack in what’s become our new obsession, “Shamen.” Evocative and emotionally charged, jazzy piano stabs punctuate a soulful, blissfully mesmerizing vocal. Finally, the closing title-track “Air” sends us off in a captivating, ethereal fashion. This stunner epitomize the feels of the summer season and all it stands for.
