2011 was the peak of the Mashup movement, acts like 3LAU, 5 & A Dime, and Kap Slap experienced some of their earliest growth spurts. During this time, Soundcloud and Youtube was flooded with dozens Mashups and Bootlegs released daily, so much so that it soon led to the over-saturation of the genre. Just as quickly as the genre had boomed and peaked, it was now in decline; and listeners moved on to newer trends. But “newer trends” is the reason I’m excited about Matt Cazwell’s “The Dirty Animal” today.
“The Dirty Animal” eclectically combines the best elements that made 2011 Mashups great but includes a much-needed modern twist, adding a sense of revival to the once flourishing genre. MOTi and DVBBS’ “This Is Dirty” and Botnek’s “Animals” remix both encompass great intensity, but slamming the two together and transitioning just before the drop hits takes the energy level sky high.
