This year’s iteration of Ultra Music Festival may be blowing away festival attendees and dedicated stream-viewers but several accidents have brought negative attention to the event. On Friday night, a security guard was critically injured after a mob forced a gate on top of her.
Miami mayor Tomas Regalado and City Commissioner Marc Sarnoff have cited the accident along with numerous arrests and injuries as reasons why they plan to meet and attempt to deny Ultra the permits for next year. If the Miami government denies the permits, Ultra Music Festival will no longer be able to occur in Miami.
Regalado commented on the situation, saying:
“This is something that could have been avoided. So in the next weeks we are going to have a discussion on the city commission level to deny the permits for next year for the event here in the city of Miami.
Sarnoff expanded on Regalado’s comment, stating:
“There was a sort of stampede of people who were trying to get in, very much like what happened last year, but it was about 500 people last year. They tried to get into the front gate last year and we had enough security from the City of Miami Police Department. They put their bikes across their chest and they pushed back and they were able to hold the people back. I’m asking the Chief and the Chief of Fire to meet with me, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Mayor. Let’s get through this weekend and put this thing to bed, never come back again.”
While it remains to be seen if the Mayor and Commissioner’s plan goes through, it cannot be denied that Ultra brings a massive amount of money to Miami. According to Ultra, one weekend of the event can bring in $79 million to the city.
