We first heard of Mickman while talking to Rhode Island’s Levitation Jones, who spoke highly of this producer who never plays shows, but constantly drops hot fire through SoundCloud. We were thrilled to hear about his new EP Through The Trivium which handily delivers on all the underground hype surrounding Mickman.
To be frank, Through the Trivium is some of the dopest electronic music we’ve heard all year. The first track “Tribal Movement” describes in both title and sound the feeling one hopes to encounter when listening to great bass music; a primordial sway anchored in heavy synth and sub bass. The next cut, “Particle Party”, is also appropriately-titled. With a swinging hip-hop beat as the foundation, Mickman’s synthesizers wobble over the track in low and high frequencies which collide to create quite a party indeed.
The remainder of the EP takes on a slower tempo, but the constant and tasteful use of sub bass gives it an aggressive touch which most “downtempo” music lacks. Of course many fans enjoy downtempo precisely because it’s not aggressive, but Mickman’s synthesis on Through The Trivium offers an interesting crossover between aggressive bass music and “chill” downtempo. All in all, this guy’s compositional skills easily rival more popular producers like Space Jesus, Freddy Todd or G Jones.
Through The Trivium is an example of the fantastic electronic music you can find when digging beneath mainstream hype. With “weird bass” becoming more and more popular, Mickman is one low-key producer helping to drive the sound further in a particularly inventive direction.
