Last week, Washington D.C. was blessed with the musical presence of Australia’s What So Not and supporting act Nadus. More specifically, 500 fans were treated to an exhilarating show at U Street Music Hall for What So Not’s first appearance in the DMV since 2014’s Mothership Tour with Skrillex.
It was certainly a busy Friday and Saturday in the nation’s capital, as a few other notable DJ’s performed at other venues. However, What So Not’s outing was arguably the premier act of the weekend. Below we provide highlights of the event.
Biggest Surprise: One hour before What So Not’s set time, a simple looking man wearing a generic Under Armour tee took the stage, and his set turned out to be anything but generic.
22 year-old Nadus provided a fiery opening set full of 808’s and future bass sounds while featuring tracks from his EP “Broke City”. With great energy and flow to his set, Nadus is someone to pay attention to for the near future.
Main Set Breakdown: W.S.N. opened with a classic tune “Touched”, providing a mellow tone to begin. The next hour of the set consisted of an eclectic blend of hip hop and bass music with songs such as Kanye West’s “Monster”, Major Lazer’s “Lean On”, and a trap-dance mix of the Beastie Boys’ “Brass Monkey”.
The second hour was underway when he began with Rudebrat’s rock remix of “Tell Me”, which transitioned into the original version spliced with Bone Crusher’s 2003 rap hit “Never Scared”. The remainder of the set incorporated trap and future house mixed with nostalgic 2000’s hip-hop hits such as Nelly’s “Hot in Here”.
The crowd was ecstatic when he closed out with his most recent single, “Gemini”.
Overall Impression: Given the quality of the sets, each DJ’s versatility, and the value of a single ticket ($20), this show was nothing short of an A grade. Nadus and What So Not are must see acts when they roll through to your town or are at your next festival.
