Microhouse is a surge of music taking over the underground community, and has been for some time now. Dating back to the ’90s, microhouse took form from genres like house, minimal techno and glitch. The simplicity, atmospheric qualities, and charisma of our beloved style has been carving its way through the playlists of music lovers everywhere.
To capture some of its essence, microhouse or minimal house can be described as a mostly sample-based style, adorned with short static clips, occasional vocals, glitches, and a solid bass-line. It’s joy-inducing melodies permeate environments and create lasting atmospheres.
One of the most interesting things about the minimal/micro house scene, is the anonymity behind a lot of the music being released. Though artists like Ricardo Villalobos, Fabe, Varhat, Mara Lakour, and Paolo Macri publicly release their music and are definitely doing big things for the scene, there are quite a few producers who would rather remain anonymous when releasing their music. Whether it be through a label’s series like Hostom on Yoyaku Records, or simply through their own aliases like Grant, the anonymity behind a lot of the music being released is definitely a unique feature of the community and only adds to the allure of the microhouse scene.
Keeping this in mind, here’s some of our top picks featuring some new and old releases from the artists mentioned above, as well as some artists we can’t quite pin down.
This may or may not be the first time you’ve heard of minimal house, but it sure as hell won’t be the last.
Thank you for reading and enjoy!
