It’s no surprise that Ultra Music Festival is one of the top electronic dance music festivals in the world. It has evolved since it’s first year in 2009 from a one day festival, to a full blown, mind blowing and sensory overloaded 3 day festival for the ages. Giving dedicated stages to world renowned and legendary Dj’s like Carl Cox, and bringing you insane stage designs like The Arcadia Spider, it’s no surprise when you hear news of them bringing back a well known and loved band, Pendulum.
If you don’t know who Pendulum is, saying that you’re in for a treat would be an understatement. Does the name Rob Swire ring a bell? The vocalist to the 2008 massive classic, “Ghosts N’ Stuff” by none other than deadmau5? Or how about Knife Party? The electro house/dubstep duo comprised of Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. Well before Knife Party came to fruition, there was Pendulum.
Pendulum started in 2002 with Rob and Gareth, along with Paul “El Hornet” Harding. The group hit big with their different but familiar sound, mixing mostly Drum n’ Bass, with Hard Rock. As they grew over time, they adopted more sounds and genres, mixing them together with more of a Rock sound. They made big waves in the charts in Australia and the UK, and here in the states as well. Eventually forming a 5-piece band with live instruments (the first to do it on that large of a scale), with Electronic influence pulsating through the cords. They toured widely for some years to come, opening for acts like Linkin Park, and headlining their own shows and festivals. They were unstoppable. Many big hit records to include “Witchcraft”, “Showdown”, and “The Island” just to name a few.
2011 comes, and Rob and Gareth announce in various interviews that they’ve got new material in the works. But it’s not what’s to be expected. They announce instead, that a new project is in the works, called Knife Party, which in no way has to do with Pendulum, nor do they plan to continue any works with Pendulum and Knife Party is to become their primary project. Though Paul Harding and Ben Mount continue to do live DJ sets across the globe, 2011 was the last time Pendulum has performed together live with a band, and basically the last anyone has seen of the group since their last live headlining show in New Zealand.
Until now. Among Ultra’s massive line-up of top notch DJ’s and performers, under the category of headliners, you can see the name in big bold capital letters. PENDULUM RETURNS. Confirmed by Pendulum themselves on Twitter, letting the eager fans know, “…yes, it will be live.” Live guitar, live bass, live drums, mixed with electro, dubstep, and drum n’ bass. It’s the best of not just two worlds, but the best of all worlds.
When a real pendulum is swung from it’s original resting position, gravity works it’s magic to push it back down toward that resting position. Ultra will be that acting force this year to bring Rob and the gang back to it’s rightful spot on stage, live, blasting beautiful live music into our patiently awaited eardrums.
