PLS&TY has grown to be one of my go-to names for when people ask about new and upcoming artists. His sound is unique, yet catchy, and puts a spin on the ‘future bass’ genre that is seeing its door into the mainstream. Last week he dropped a gem of a collaboration with friend and producer Autolaser entitled “Hiding From The Rain”. This track has an amazing melody and sensual vocals from singer MARØ with a chorus section that will give you all the feels. This track adds to an already large catalog of music from PLS&TY and is a highlight of that one of a kind sound that separates him from the pack. A producer’s schedule can get very busy in the early stages of their success. Fortunately, I was able to get a chance to speak with the man behind the music of PLS&TY:
What started you on your path in producing music?
I’ve basically been playing piano all my life; I’ve been classically trained and have been playing instruments my whole life. I think having that background in music segued pretty nicely into production with chord making and wording and composing etc., that definitely helped.
I managed to find your old Youtube channel of old after movies, is there anything about your past as a videographer that helps with music making?
Videography really opened me up to the world of live performance and everything that goes along with it. I was able to see the long days and nights, travelling, backstage, green room antics, everything. Most importantly it allowed me to connect with fans and gave me the ability to connect with other people through music. With making music, like making a short film, the producer is trying to evoke a certain feeling of emotion in their audience. Creating films introduced me to the concept of uniqueness with each piece; the feeling that someone gets when hearing a piece of music or watching a video will never be exactly the same.
Who do you draw influences or inspiration from when making your songs?
I get a lot of inspiration from experiences and also the world around me. Travelling and seeing new things and going new places is always super inspiring.
When producing a song, how do you structure your workflow?
For remixes I really build everything around the a capella. It’s kind of why I like to remix; everything on the music composition side is entirely original just behind the a capella.
So would you say your like remixes over making original tracks?
With remixing its its own unique thing because you essentially have an idea of where to go with it (with the original song that you’re remixing). I think with composing something original its an entirely different process. I wouldn’t say I like one more than the other, but its each its own unique thing.
What point in your career did you realize “music might work out after all”?
It was really the success of the Baby Bash “Suga Suga” remix that kind of kick started everything. It was the first time I uploaded a song where the play count numbers didn’t die off at a certain point; it just kept growing and growing. So that was probably the one that kick started it for me.
How would you describe a PLS&TY live show to someone who’s only scrolled through your Soundcloud?
I’d say my show differs in the sense that it’s a little bit of new school with a little of old school. I like to bring throwback songs into the new electronic realm with remixes. You’re not just hearing whats new on Soundcloud, you’re hearing songs that you might be familiar with, that you were growing up listening to, but with my take on it.
I also noticed you have a lot of collaborations with Autolaser?
Yeah, working with Autolaser is always really fantastic because I think our ideas match super well together. Personally I’m a huge fan of him and I think that working with someone who I’m such a big fan of already is inspiring.
This might be similar to Remix vs Original, but how is producing a collaboration different from producing a solo track?
Yeah I wouldn’t say I like one or the other better, but I think its always good to have another person’s ideas flowing there in the session. Even if it’s not in the session its always great to have another person’s ideas flowing alongside yours; especially when you really work well with someone. For me personally I really like Autolaser, but collaborating with the right person can really be amazing because you get the best of both worlds.
Any producers out there who you feel should get more publicity?
People might be familiar with some of these, but I would say my top five right now are: K?D, Jupe, Khasmin, Wheathin, and Graves.
What do you consider your mission with PLS&TY?
More than anything I just wish that my music can be an outlet for people; whether that is to overcome any sort of adversity or anything that their going though, or simply something for people to enjoy and listen to. I would say that’s my mission. I would also hope to inspire others enough to want to create art themselves and be able to provide inspiration both artistically and personally.
PLS&TY will continue to be one of my favorite new artists. This most recent release is only evidence of that; his sound continues to evolve and offers a new perspective on what can sound beautiful. It was great to be able to talk to PLS&TY and we expect nothing but big things as he builds his career. Check out all of his tracks on Soundcloud and share it if you like it! It’ll be your way of helping an up and coming artist realize his mission.
