It would appear that Disney and electronic music have collided yet again, however this time in the form of a possible trademark battle between the distinguished company and Canadian Progressive-House aficionado, Joel Zimmerman (generally known by the alias of Deadmau5). A leading figure in the electronic music scene, Deadmau5 can be easily identified by the iconic “Mau5head” that he dons while performing, which has naturally been rendered into an easily discernible logo:
Last year, Joel filed to trademark his signature logo, ultimately encompassing its use on various items, such as: “electrical and scientific apparatus, vehicles (specifically BMX bikes), paper goods, leather goods, toys and sporting goods, staple foods (like coffee), light beverages and entertainment services.” However, Disney has revealed that it finds Deadmau5′ mouse-shaped insignia to be too similar to the classic Mickey Mouse head, and fears that consumers may misinterpret the mark, and find themselves confused as to the origin of the product:
Last Friday, they reportedly divulged that they will be investigating this trademark registration, and have successfully appealed for 90 days to explore the issue. After the 90 days are up, they may, in fact, choose to file a notice of opposition. With the similarities between the two heads being a running joke in the dance music community, this situation may seem comical to some. Be sure to check back to this site for more news and updates.
