While we previously covered “Subliminal”, the first single from Andrew Widdlecomb’s new EP, we couldn’t help but jump on board again once the full release graced our ears in its entirety. We at RaverRafting love this EP, as the collection is not only an example of incredible bass mastery, but also a pointed commentary on the human psyche itself. As the name aptly implies, What’s Really Going On delivers powerful content that both befuddles the minds of its audience and questions the neurological foundations of modern society.
Opening the EP with the title track, Satori indeed wastes absolutely no time in bringing the heat (right to our Amygdala). Laced with samples detailing technology-enhanced information processing, the track itself certainly reads as a stimulus overload. From one twisted bass line to the next, “what’s really going on” proves itself to be as unrelenting as it is immersive. The second track, “Subliminal,” takes a slightly different approach to arrive at the same mind-melting conclusion. Satori drops the tempo significantly and chooses to explore a deeper wobble bass (think Ganja White Night) that, when layered with an aggressive midrange lead and a weighty discussion of subliminal messaging, packs quite a punch. The final track “Diversion” is nothing short of phenomenal. Utilizing a percussive swing that would compel even the most seasoned stoic into animation, “Diversion” would likely break your neck long before it had the chance to scramble your brain, should you listen on a decent rig. Trust that as long as the song is within earshot, all competing auditory stimuli will be of little to no consequence.
In addition to the high quality of production, Satori is joined by mastering heavyweight Jade Cicada on the release, which has clearly proved to be an explosive combination.
