People are in uproar about Spinnin’ Records posting this photo of a makeshift Pioneer CD-J on top of a stove burner. The comment accompanying the photo posting on the Spinnin’ Records Facebook page says, “Pioneer finally developed a CD-J for women”.
The anti-feminist photo is not only offensive, but also damaging to the industry where there’s already a double standard for female DJs and producers. There are no female artists in the Forbes Magazine Top-10. Even Rebecca & Fiona are still asked “Who makes your music?” on a regular basis, a question that’s clearly out of line.
For a scene that preaches peace, love, unity and respect, making jokes about gender roles and inequality is totally off base.
Update:
Spinnin’ Records made the right decision taking to Twitter and publicly apologizing for the photo. While it was off base, the company did make amends by issuing a statement re-affirming their commitment to male and female DJs.
As a record label that works with both male & female DJs & artists, it was of course never our intention to offend anyone. 2/4

Some people are still upset that Spinnin’ didn’t admit that it was at fault or anything wrong had occurred. Specifically that they did not mean to offend women, when clearly the joke was targeting women. The caption says, “Pioneer finally developed a CD-J for women”.
Therefore, we would like to apologize to those we have unintentionally offended with the tweet. 4/4

In the end the label did apologize, something that they did not have to do. Even though it was half-hearted, it still has to count for something.
