A vast majority of your time in this game, you will spend wandering around encountering new horrors around every corner. The game throws you into this strange, LSD inspired world with little direction. It often employs standard level design tricks to point the player in the right way, such as large glowing lights, or crescendos in sound. This is a game where paying attention is key.
Strobophagia focuses less on character development than it does on immersion. That’s not to say there are not characters, however they often hide behind anonymity and only communicate with you briefly. There are many simple puzzles you will have to complete, several of which can actually catch you by surprise at first. The first one, we actually solved by mistake. A tip if you’re stuck, by turning on the volume to the DJ, we were able to clear the room in front of the beer tent, allowing us to pass.
Other puzzles, such as the maze, still confuse us even though we solved them.
The game’s art direction is what truly makes the game shine. The vibrant colors, eerie atmosphere, and hauntingly exciting music truly add up to something enjoyable. Frequently, we caught ourselves head-banging to the music being played, especially in the second act after the first jump scare. For some, this alone may be worth the price. The collecting aspect of the unique masks in photo form is also a nice touch and emphasizes the smartphone critique.
This game also does not shy away from making a point. There is a strong emphasis on cults throughout, especially with the bird masks. The DJs are worshiped like gods and the people dance like nothing is inside their heads. At one point you even stumble on a demonic summoning circle and a zombie (at least we think it’s a zombie). This moment provides the first true jump scare of the game.
For a game with no dialogue, it still has quite a lot to say.
Verdict:
Strobophagia | Rave Horror is a short puzzle horror game that fans of the genre may enjoy. The game seems like it would be best enjoyed in VR if you have the equipment, however is still enjoyable without. The game is very light on story and narrative and is easy it get enveloped in. What it lacks in those departments, however, it makes up for with its compelling art direction, style, and sound.
