Assault charges have accumulated for Rashad Charjuan Owens, the 21-year-old man whose reckless actions ended the lives of four people and injured 17 others at Austin’s South by Southwest Conference in March.
The four newest charges are related to victim injuries, ranging from scratches to a fractured neck. Owens now faces a total of 24 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of capital murder for the on-site deaths of Jamie West, 27, and Massive Music’s Steven Craenmehr, 35. Owens may also be charged with murder for the deaths of DeAndre Tatum, 18, and Sandy Le, 26.
The most severely injured victim was 18-year-old Mason Endres, who underwent two rounds of surgery and has endured a prolonged hospital stay. Endres’ injuries are included in the new counts.
Owens was arrested after barreling his vehicle through police obstructions and striking a crowd of SXSW festival-goers. Due to the additional charges his bail is now set at $5 million, an increase of $500,000.
