As I reflected on this summer’s past events at Governor’s Island on my ferry ride to the Beach Club, many things came into retrospect. Summer 2012 has been one to remember – Juicy Beach New York, Tritonal, and the rest of the events curated by Made Event. The cool breeze lifted my thoughts and succinctly drew a realization. A DJ (Tenaglia) who has been around since the late 80’s early 90’s was getting ready to grace the same venue superseded any thoughts of what dance music has become. Myself and those around me were about to experience a class in culture 101; the progression of electronic music.
Tech house seems to have become a lost art, a fallen soldier in the evolution of modern dance music. This day, though, was a ressurection and a clear affirmation that New York still has mad love for the sub-genre. Pleasurekraft began to…pleasure. Lasers, lights, and seductive deep tech resonated on the island spiking the serotonin of every individual in attendance. The night grew darker and the dance floor grew more infested with beat catching mania. It soon became evident that the energy would only become more frantic – literally everyone I encountered had a smile on their face.
John Digweed layed down the funk house. His set became a journey and the entire set was a steady build. Seemingly psychoactive, I became enthralled in the breakdowns as the pulse vibrated across the dance floor. Slow white noise soothed while the infused bass-tech step kept my limbs in motion, as if he was a puppeteer behind the tables.
Danny Tenaglia was the euphoric groove that I had been patiently waiting for. Tenaglia was like a good bottle of wine, aged to perfection and ready to be poured. He methodically created a developing set that paced the temperament of the crowd most dynamically. Nothing was too overwhelming, more like a pleasant tribal take to electronic (purely an opinion of my personal ear). I could feel the old club influence on his music which was as refreshing as the skyline view to my left.
New York gave me something new to reflect on that night – dance music is a never ending chain of creation. DJ’s new and old are a part of the contribution to what the scene has become today. Everyone who considers themselves a fanatic needs to grasp the roots of tech house and embrace them, because it’s a sign of where we have been…as well as where we are going.
Special thanks to Made Event and Plexi PR for providing the experience.
