In the realm of house music, Thomas Gold is a seasoned veteran who always succeeds in putting on a great show.
Over the last several years, he’s gained a huge following and released several hits, including his most recent collaboration with Lush & Simon titled, “Morphine”.
Prior to his show at club Torrent in Baltimore on November 20, RR was able to catch up with him to find out more about his past, present, and future:
With such a hectic travel schedule, is it difficult to make time to work on new productions?
Sometimes it is. I can get some production stuff done on the road, but mostly I work in my studio in Berlin when it comes to creating new music. I just can focus better on the music when I have my proper room and speakers. To make sure that I get enough studio time, or sometimes take a break from the touring for a couple of weeks and I spend all time in the studio. That’s where I can get really creative!
What is it like collaborating with Lush & Simon? How did you all decide on the name for your new track, ‘Morphine’?
Regarding the track name it was more of a fun thing, no deeper sense or idea behind it. And for the collaboration, I really love what the guys are doing, I’m a fan of almost every single track they did. So when we accidentally met we spoke about doing something together and it went all pretty quick. We had a rough idea, put all our ideas into it, sent the track back and forth and that was it! They’re really great guys to work with!
In a DJ Market that’s as talented as ever, what differs you from other artists and makes you stand out?
I think I have my very own style – both for the productions and for DJing. My production approach is always very musical, with a lot of melodic build-ups and mostly punchy drop sections. My DJ sets reflects my personal idea of club music – uplifting, energetic, but still very emotional with some ‘classics’ included. And of course I play a lot of my very own music![/accordion]
At what point in your life did you realize being a DJ/musician would be your full-time career?
I think it was around 10 years ago when I started traveling globally for my DJ sets. I got my first bookings agency and management. That was when I realized that my dream would come true and that this would become a fulltime job!
Early in your career, were there any particular artists or people that provided mentorship to help you grow?
I got a lot of support from the guys from the Swedish House Mafia, they played many of my tracks and releases at that time. Also I was able (and proud!) to support them on a lot of their big shows. Both Steve Angello and Axwell signed my tracks to their labels (‘AGORa’ and ‘Sing2Me’) which was amazing and helped me a lot back in the days.
Do you have any other talents that people may not know about, like playing other instruments or singing?
I play keyboards (which people might know about) but I do NOT sing (and nobody really would like to hear me doing it haha!)
Do you envision a certain age where you would ‘retire’ from DJ’ing and music production?
No. I just can’t think about that now.
With 2015 coming to a close, would you say you’ve accomplished the goals you’ve set out for the year?
Yes! I’ve released a bunch of tracks which was my goal for this year – and I could finally find my personal balance of touring and studio time, which is to me an important achievement as well. Also, I was able to travel the world and play so many great places!
