In a recent interview with DJ Mag, Tiesto was posed with the question, “If you hadn’t left trance in 2007-2008, do you think you would have become so big in the U.S.?”
Rather than giving a brief answer, Tiesto provided an elaborate, insightful, but harsh response:
Maybe, it’s hard to say. I think I would still be Tiesto trance guy, but the difference is you’re not really being relevant when you still have your gigs and your following. I think some of the old trance guys still have their following, but it doesn’t feel like anybody REALLY cares. And I think that’s the biggest difference.
It’s nice to be in touch with the new kids that are coming up, the 16 and 18 year olds who are producing house music and they see me as kind of a Godfather, and that’s really cool to be in touch with them. I think if I were to be the trance DJ, they would have been so disconnected with that sound, that I wouldn’t be that much inspiration for them, and vice-a-versa.
While it initially sounds like he’s bashing older trance artists, Tiesto is actually speaking the truth. Trance legends such as Paul Oakenfold and ATB can still pack the house wherever they go, but it’s mainly a crowd of previous generation dance music fans coming to listen to classics.
With Tiesto transitioning to house, he has capitalized on capturing a much larger, new fan base during the EDM boom than any of the classic DJ’s.

It’s a tough pill to swallow, but it’s difficult grapple the upcoming generation of EDM fans by playing purely trance. Trance Gods Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond are wildly popular and extremely relevant, and it’s arguably because they’ve fused elements of house music into their songs and sets over the last couple years. If you’ve heard one of their recent sets, at certain points it’s hard to decipher whether they’re playing house or playing trance.
