In a recent interview with MTV News UK just before his set at EDC London, Tiesto commented on Calvin Harris’ commercial success and Avicii’s new Rural American inspired tune “Wake Me Up”.
I think Calvin is so talented that he can make a single with somebody on the street and it’ll still be Top 10! It’s not just that he works with big singers I think.
Harris’ transition from “I Created Disco” (oh, the days) to chart topping hits with artists like Rihanna, Florence Welch and Ellie Goulding have turned him into one of pop music’s most sought after producers.
Whatever he does, it works. Crack music is the key to success and Harris has it figured out. Tiesto, on the other hand, admits his DJ DNA isn’t quite the same:
“But for me I like to work with a lot of indie artists and I hope to have one hit like that in the future but it’s not very easy – I’m not that good in writing those kind of hits.”
Something tells me if you put Tiesto and Ellie Goulding together no wrong could be done. While I’m personally a huge fan of older Calvin, it’s tough to dismiss or criticize an artist for doing what he needs to do in order to elevate a career. Some call it selling out, I call it progress. However, fans would appreciate a healthy balance from time to time.
And here’s a little crate digger from when the two made a track together back in the day.
