While engaging in my normal morning Soundcloud peruse, I came across something very different that caught my eye. At the very top of my Soundcloud feed, Tommie Sunshine had uploaded a webshow from NPR. Now normally, public radio is the last thing I want to listen to when trying to get my Friday poppin’, however I was drawn to it’s unmistakable title “The Agony and Utility of Ecstasy on NPR”. Also, Tommie Sunshine has made huge strides in the education of the electronic culture and the drug use that is associated with it. This 10-minute segment carries a ton of information, and it’s portrayed in a non-biased manner which is extremely rare to find on both sides on the spectrum. Tommie Sunshine speaks on this issue in such an educated and respectful way, and he displays the truth that many of us have found at these events:
I’m 8 years sober, so I’m completely on the other side. But let me tell you something, when you’re on the dance floor and it’s two o’clock in the morning, your eyes are closed, and that bassline hits you in just the right way, there is nothing that needs to be augmented with that for it to make you feel something.
It’s great to see artists take a stand, and address the stigma of drug use at electronic events and Tommie Sunshine is a phenomenal role model for our generation. He advocates for self-choice and education, which should be a lesson that is radiated throughout our culture. Because in the end, there is no other factor but the actions that one takes and the risks associated with those choices.
