Liquid Stranger’s new record label Wakaan is getting off to a heavy start with excellent “freeform electronic music” from the Stranger himself, Martin Staaf.
Nomad Vol. 1 is the first official release on Wakaan, and as a three-song EP it achieves a striking diversity from crushing amorphous bass drops to focused and punctuated dance grooves. Wakaan’s Soundcloud claims to offer “freeform electronic music”, and their first release lends truth to this statement.
It’s difficult to apply a genre to any track. The rising melody and dance step of “This Feeling” is interrupted by a blur of swooping bass and trappy synth stabs. “Get Up” is a synthesis of original UK dub sounds and catchy American pop hooks. “Fuzz” blends gnarly bass with echoing, 8-bit bleeps and bloops at an impossibly slow pace. Nomad is freeform music, and the title of the release perhaps points to Martin’s own wandering as he searches for new sounds and styles after twenty years of acclaimed production.
We’re looking for more music from Wakaan as soon as possible. Hopefully artists who enjoy deconstructing musical traditions and rebuilding them anew will join Liquid Stranger on his label dedicated to exploring electronic music indefinitely. If you’d like to support Liquid Stranger and Wakaan, you can purchase Nomad Vol. 1 here. There’s also some valuable information about each track included in the purchase.
