“Keep The Memories” out August 25th on Funkadelphia Recordings is the first EP from Wax Future, a fresh and funky electro soul duo from Philadelphia. “Keep the Memories” is also the group’s first single, a laid back, nostalgic groove which ramps up into a smooth clash of synthesizers and guitar.
A backdrop of wide, ambient synths set the scene for adept guitar riffing and jazzy saxophone samples. As the track progresses the bass synthesizers drop in heavy waves, setting up a powerful call-and-response with the guitar. The drums stand out with a unique swing that’s more rock and roll than EDM.
Wax Future’s name mirrors their sound. Vinyl records are colloquially called “wax”, and in the studio the duo fill their music with their own organic instrumental samples. The duo’s rendition of the blues, jazz, rock or funk is then throttled into the future with melodic synthesizer work and crisp, hard-hitting drum tracks. Their production style is progressive while also harkening back to original experiments into electronic production by conventional musicians i.e. Pink Floyd.
Live instrumentation has become common in electro soul, whether it’s the Michal Menert big band or Russ Liquid’s on-stage trumpet solos. Wax Future is based on this harmonized combination of noise. Along with artists like Late Night Radio, Pretty Lights and more Wax Future brilliantly blurs the line between electronic dance music and classic forms of American roots music.
