Hailing from NYC the young and talented producer WTCHCRFT drops the dark and dreamy ‘Bedtime Stories EP’ on Onamazu. Following up on his production hit “Corduroy” with rapper Bones and his SCHIZOID album from earlier this year WTCHCRFT continues developing a style driven by punctual, hip-hop influenced percussion and deeply-pitched synthesizer melodies.
“Between the Sheets”, a single from Bedtime Stories featuring vocal talent from Trevor Daniel, plays like a dystopian R&B lullaby. It smacks of the heavily-synthesized trap-style production popularized lately by Future and The Weekend, but with more thoughtful and melodious arrangements which demand deeper listening.
The same can be said for the rest of the EP. There’s a dissonance of sound and attitude at work on Bedtime Stories that is so attractive, a tension that develops from song to song which never resolves itself. From the wrenching, drawn-out synthesizer on”The Divine” to the meandering ballad “October” and the chilling, echoing vocals on “The 9th” (courtesy of Echavox), it’s easy to get lost in Bedtime Stories.
WTCHCRFT is one of a number of producers on the NYC label Onamazu including Elevate and KYLI who are painting new forms of dark and spacious soundscape. For all the hype lately in electronica about “future this”, “future that” and “too future for you”, Onamazu is bringing fresh, unique tunes with little pretension and lots of delivery. WTCHCRFT leads the way with Bedtime Stories which you can purchase through Beatport, iTunes or JunoDownload
